Senator Weaver invites students to take part in Youth Advisory Council
Peoria- High school students have a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the lawmaking process as part of State Senator Chuck Weaver’s (R-Peoria) 2016 Youth Advisory Council.
“Our Youth Advisory Council is an exciting event that helps engage students in the process of how their government writes the laws that govern all of our daily lives,” said Senator Weaver. “It’s amazing to watch students take on the actual process of proposing legislation.”
The Youth Advisory Council consists of two immersive days, first on November 2nd on the campus of Blackhawk College East, and a second during the Spring Legislative Session at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield.
During the fall session, students will hear from local and state leaders, learn how the lawmaking process works, then propose and vote on legislation themselves. During the students’ spring trip to the Capitol, they will have the opportunity to see the state legislature in action, and take further action on the legislation they proposed during the fall meeting.
“Senator Weaver’s Youth Advisory Council was an amazing experience,” said Isaiah Harlan, a student who took part in the 2015 Youth Advisory Council. “It was great to actually try to pass laws, and to get to see up-close how government really works. I would definitely recommend it to any other students interested in government and politics.”
Interested students, their parents, and teachers are encouraged to contact Senator Weaver’s district office in Peoria for more information, at 309-693-4921.
